Pop-ups
This section contains all the pop-ups you have. You can view them by activity status. Active - these are the pop-ups that are currently being shown to users. Inactive are the ones you have created but are not yet using, or have used before. Drafts are mostly needed for test pop-ups, for example, for design experiments. Split-tests - pop-ups with testing in any status other than draft.
You can read the nuances of setting up successful conversion pop-ups on the example of one of ours clients.
This tab allows you to activate/deactivate, copy, edit or delete a pop-up.
Creating a pop-up (visual part)
By clicking on the create window button you are taken to the wizard for setting up the pop-up.
At the first step you need to specify the name of the pop-up and select its type. Gathering pop-ups are used for lead generation, they contain a form for capturing user's email or phone number. Informative ─ will allow you to tell the latest news, inform about new products, promotions, favourable delivery conditions or simply wish you a good day. They do not contain a form for capturing an email.
Pop-ups with a ready-made template
Next, select a pop-up template. Templates are filtered by location type. Here you can also choose from previously created or downloaded templates.
On the “Appearance” step, customise the main template text and buttons, and specify (in case of a collecting pop-up) what action should happen after the user leaves their data in the window - closing the window, clicking a link or showing a thank you page.
You can set up an additional pop-up that will thank your subscriber and point them in the right direction. For example, it will prompt them to check their email and find a confirmation email. This “thank you page” will be in the same style as the main window.
Additionally, you will need to customise it:
- Basic fields - to collect email, phone number or name
- Data fields (not available for all templates) - specify field type and choose where to record collected information
- Colour scheme (unique for each template)
At the same step you can see how the pop-up will look like on your computer screen or mobile device.
You can select a maximum of one field type for each of the templates with data fields:
- Single choice - up to three answer choices (minimum 2, maximum 3). You can record the answer in a data field of type “Text”
- Text - record the answer in a data field of the “Text” type
- Date - record the answer in a data field of type “Date”. Can be used for birthday
- Checkbox - enter the answer in a data field of type “Logical”.
- Number - write the answer to the data field of type “Number”
Customisable pop-ups
In addition to using ready-made designs, you can customise the template to suit you. Customisable templates are available in the “Customisable” section after selecting the pop-up type. We now have three customisable collecting templates (two standard and wheel of fortune) and one standard customisable informing pop-up.
The difference between a customisable pop-up and a pop-up with a ready-made design is that for the customisable one you can set:
- colours of all elements
- rounding of all elements
- image
Only for customisable buildable pop-ups you can additionally set the following options hidden fields.
These can be used to identify all contacts signed from a specific pop-up or a specific split test version. In the process, the contacts can be segmented according to the values recorded in these fields.
The principle of their operation is as follows:
- the value of such a field will be assigned to a contact that has signed up from a pop-up
- for split tests you can set different values of the same field for each of the versions
- this field will not be displayed in the pop-up itself on the website or in the details of the pop-up in the enKod platform.
- up to 5 hidden fields can be added to one pop-up
- changes in the values of the hidden field will be displayed in the contact card events: “Left data” and “Change data field”.
Otherwise, the configuration of such a window is the same as the usual ones. You can choose this option to create a pop-up for your site and design system.
After customising the pop-up view, proceed to the next step.
Creating a pop-up (display settings)
At the “Display settings” step, specify the following:
- Show a link to the personal data processing policy in the pop-up - according to the Federal Law №152-FZ “On Personal Data”, you must tell your future subscriber about the purpose of collecting, processing, storing, accounting of his/her personal data before collecting them. You can place the policy in the footer of your website. But at the moment of subscription via pop-up, adding a link to the policy will be more convenient and transparent for the subscriber. You can find out how to add a link in settings.
- Close window by clicking on the outer area - if ticked, the user will be able to close the window by clicking on the outer area. If unchecked, the window can only be closed by clicking on the cross.
- Hide window when inactive for a specified time - if the pop-up window is ignored by the visitor, it can stay until closed or disappear after some time that can be configured (from 5 to 60 seconds).
- Show pop-up on every page refresh - you can optionally select this setting if you need to show the same pop-up multiple times per session, but be careful with this because it can cause a negative reaction from the user.
The final step is to set the conditions for showing the pop-up. Here you can select segments, to which the window will be shown, as well as assign the pop-up to them mailing groups, to which you want the user to subscribe.
Click on the “Activate” button to start the window display, or select “Save as Draft” to return to it later.
Emails entered in pop-ups are validated. Validation will prevent the user from entering an invalid email address into the pop-up
Pop-up display conditions
The final step is to customize the conditions for showing the pop-up. Here you can select segments to which the pop-up window will be shown, as well as assign the pop-up to mailing groups to which the user should subscribe.
Commonly used segments
- Condition: “Page address → URL” - used to show the pop-up only on a certain page of the site (URL equals/contains) or, on the contrary, to exclude certain pages of the site from possible display locations (does not equal/not contain)
- Condition: “Site Behavior” - here you can configure the pop-up to show after certain user actions on the site: adding a product to cart, visiting a specific page, scrolling the page to your chosen values and more.
- “Device type” condition - responsible for displaying pop-ups for PC only or for mobile only
Click on the “Activate” button to start the pop-up display, or select “Save as Draft” to come back to it later.
Emails entered into pop-ups are validated. Validation will prevent a user from entering an invalid e-mail address into a pop-up.
Split test
When setting up pop-ups, you can run a split test and determine which version of design, content, location brings in more conversions.
The way you measure conversions depends on the type of pop-up:
- informing: conversions are clicks on buttons in the pop-up excluding the close button
- Collecting: conversion is the number of events in which a contact left their details in the pop-up.
To set up a split test, you need to click on the corresponding button on the first or second step of window creation.
You will have the opportunity to select “window B”, for which the template, actions and content are similarly customised. In the “Actions” and “Window Editor” step, all the steps are similar to setting up a regular popup. And then an additional step is added - “Split Test”.
On the “Split Test” step you need to choose the test period (from 1 to 40 days) and what will happen after the test is over: whether to automatically show the winning version of the window or not.
Prevent pop-up windows from showing when switching from an email message
In order to disable the display of pop-ups for customers who accessed the site from an email message, you need to add the URL parameter eksubsemail to the links in the email, in the value of which pass the recipient's email using the personalisation tag {{user_guide:pop-up:subscriber_email}}.
