Text version of the message

If an email has a text version, it will be displayed in the mailer if HTML display is not possible or disabled.

In rare cases (less than 1%) recipients refuse to receive HTML emails. In this case, they can only receive a message that has a text version (Content-Type: text/plain).

A number of email services have a positive attitude to the presence of a text version additional to HTML and increases the chances of the message getting to the inbox. That's why for each e-mail created via the enKod interface (regular or scripted, any sending method) a text version is automatically generated based on the original HTML version.

Automatic generation of the text version occurs when:

  • creating a new message:
    • via Stripo block editor
    • inserting HTML code
    • selecting a message template
    • loading the message archive
  • when making changes to the message layout (HTML, archive, template, block editor) and then saving.

A text version is automatically NOT generated when copying messages created before 03.10.2024. You can create it at any time via message editing.

Text version generation rules:

  • The text version is inserted into the body of the email before the HTML version
  • All text from HTML is automatically duplicated into the text version
  • All hyperlinks are turned into text + URL. For example:
  • No dynamic content is generated - including a link to the web version and unsubscribe
  • Colors, highlights and other style markup are omitted
  • Images, videos, and other media are omitted.
  • Text hidden in the parent layout is displayed.

Tracking statistics in the text version:

Since it is impossible to place a pixel in the text version, which is used to count email opennings, the fact of an opening can be recorded only at the first click on any tracking link in the email.

To track statistics, make sure there is at least one link in the text version and the “Track clicks in text version” checkbox is checked

By default, all generated links in the text version of an enKod email are converted to tracking links. If you don't need to record statistics of recipients' interactions with the text version of the email, you can uncheck the checkbox for the text version and opens/clicks will not be recorded in it.

Read more about how tracking recipient actions works in the text version:

  • if an email had only an opening, nothing will be recorded in the statistics (since the text version cannot use pixels)
  • if there was an opening and a click, both opening and click will be recorded (the first click adds 1 opening, subsequent clicks are just recorded as clicks).
  • if there was interaction with HTML and text version, actions in both versions will be recorded (taking into account peculiarities of text version statistics recording).
  • clicks in the text version are not shown in the click map
  • links added to the text version manually (not duplicated from HTML) will not be tracked.

How to edit the text version:

Note, when you change the text version - the HTML version is not changed.

.

In the message creation wizard, after adding the initial HTML-version of the message by any method (template, HTML-editor, copying the message, Stripo editor, downloading the archive) the “Text version” button will appear:

Clicking on it will open the text version edit box:

Any changes will be saved after clicking the “Save” button.

**Note that if any changes are made to the HTML version, the text version will be automatically overwritten to match the new HTML content. This is designed to avoid a strong discrepancy between the two versions of the email and to avoid raising suspicions of spam filters on the recipients side of the email.

Editing links from the message details does NOT apply to the text version.

We don't recommend this, but you can send emails without the text version by manually removing it from the edit box and keeping the value blank.
